What to buy for a Maine Coon kitten
Bringing a Maine Coon kitten into your home is a joyous event, but you need to prepare for it in advance. The Maine Coon is a large breed, so many items should be purchased in a large size right from the start, "for them to grow into."
- Litter box A standard small litter box will not work for a Maine Coon. You will need:
- a large litter box,
- ideally an XL size right away,
- a covered one (litter box house) is an option if the kitten isn't afraid of it.
- Litter The most commonly used types are:
- clumping,
- wood pellets,
- silica gel. For the first time, it's best to get the litter the kitten is used to at the breeder's to avoid stress.
- Scratching post Maine Coons need a tall and sturdy scratching post because they love to stretch out to their full length. It is better to choose:
- a post 100–120 cm high,
- a stable base,
- thick sisal rope.
- Bowls You need at least three bowls:
- for water,
- for dry food,
- for wet food. Best materials:
- ceramic,
- metal,
- glass. Plastic is undesirable — it can cause allergies and absorbs odors.
- Carrier The carrier must be large and sturdy, as Maine Coons grow quickly. It is best to immediately get a carrier designed for small dog breeds.
- Bed Maine Coons love:
- large beds,
- cat houses,
- hammocks,
- resting in high places (on cat trees).
- Toys Toys are absolutely necessary:
- balls,
- wand toys,
- toy mice,
- interactive toys. Maine Coons are very intelligent and playful; they need games and interaction.
- What else you will need You also need to buy:
- nail clippers,
- a comb and a brush,
- shampoo for long-haired cats,
- hairball paste,
- pet wet wipes.
